INDIANA FIRE CHIEF DIES AFTER MOTORCYCLE CRASH
The Portland, Indiana community is mourning the loss of their fire chief. 34-year old Matt Aker was killed Saturday after a Motorcycle Crash. A car apparently hit him while he was riding his motorcycle. Portland is in eastern Indiana, about two hours from downtown Indianapolis.
As detailed by www.wthr.com in the article, "Motorcycle Crash Kills Indiana Fire Chief," the Vehicle Collision happened as Aker was in a Walmart parking lot. He apparently was riding past one vehicle when a car that was pulling out of the parking lot hit him. The car's driver told Indiana investigators she could not see Aker or his motorcycle when she was pulling out of the lot. Aker was pronounced dead at a Fort Wayne, Indiana area hospital.
Unfortunately, thousands of motorcyclists are killed every year in the United States. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 4,595 motorcycles were involved in deadly crashes in 2009. That accounted for about 10% of all fatal vehicle crashes that year.
